NY Fashion Week : G-Star

G-Star is one of our most beloved brands and we love when they put on a show because it is always a good one. Amazing silhouettes and great details, they showed how they are at the forefront of modern denim design. I adore the fact that their details and design are always with functionality in mind and make the clothes more wearable.

As Alison Baenen wrote in her review for style.com:

"Functionality was key, with several pieces of outerwear equipped with straps and cords that did this or that. One lucky model's backpack came equipped with a flask, and there was a clever denim jacket with a built-in windbreaker. Despite their somewhat subdued presentation, though, the clothes were the same saucy spin of classic American sportswear that fans expect."

There are so many things to love about this look that I saw on a recent Denimology blog!  I love that the shorts are G-Star, although we don't have this style in G-Star we do have a True Religion pair that is a dead ringer, the Blaire Boyfriend Fit Short in Dakota Sky.  For the more daring we have shorter version of this short is the True Religion Kiera Short in Dakota. 
We have got heaps of cool belts, but I think the Elise M Collection Amelia Belt in Black is the closest if feel to this belt (even if it is black!). 
Pair this with your favorite white tank or one with a bit of detail.  We have tons of tanks, with or without details like rhinestones, lace or ruffles to make it a more personalized choice if you like.

Celebrity Sighting: Justin Bieber in G-Star Raw

Pint-sized pop star Justin Bieber was spotted recently rolling through a DC airport covered from tip to toe in G-Star merch.

G-Star is best known for rather more monochromatic coloring, so that little bit of peek-a-boo blue on Bieber could be considered a break in the theme - were it not for the brand's recent pigment shift in their fall 2010 line.

G-Star Stands Out at NY Fashion Week

G-Star made their highly anticipated fall debut at New York's Fall/Winter Shows this Tuesday with a surprising splash of color. Signature pockets and collars showed the brand held true to their roots, but instead of the usual dour shades punctuated with the occasion flash of bright, the runway was flooded with electric shades of blue, yellow, and even green mixed in with the more muted tones of brown and beige.

Also novel was the runway, which in recent years has been populated with trampolines, shifting screens and myriad avant garde effects. This season saw an elegant (albeit stationary) runway with interlocking lines and a background of minimal lasers, but the simplicity of the set only made the styles pop more.

Fashionable Fine Print

We girls don't give gents much credit when it comes to complexity but I think much more is due, especially when seeing the gorgeous little details being incorporated into menswear these days.

See below for some UrbanMinx favorites featuring fun accents and hidden facets which have recreated the button down shirt.

Designer branding can be overly audacious, drowning out essential style elements with bold lettering and logos, but G-Star shows the more artful way of managing. Every little button on this Gould Shirt is etched with the G-Star name - defined but not demanding, and ultra chic with their distressed texture.

Even more impressive is how G-Star communicates their signature military theme in the sharp angles of the collar and pockets, as well as the ever-present epaulet shoulders.

Plaid is too often plain, but Ben Sherman plays the print up in their Starling Shirt. Tucked within the collar and cuffed sleeves of the Starling is a contrasting checkerboard pattern, which is basic enough on its own but when combined with the plaid it simply pops!

This particular style is all about subtle shifts in the norm. Notice the skewed angle of the same-plaid pockets. Like the checkerboard addition it creates interest without interruption.

Who knew something as simple as shifting your shapes around could make such a difference? Bogosse shows how it's done in their Jit 02 Shirt. The Jit features rectangular buttons (how revolutionary!) set into pairs along the front button placket and cuffs. This arrangement changes the appearance entirely, creating a sense of cohesion.

The Matis from Bogosse is rich with detail without being overwhelming. The floral print is fancy but not overtly feminine, with the leather tab accents and (again-square) burnt orange buttons finding a fashionable niche.

When it comes to embellishments Monarchy is king. This particular Die Hard shirt is styled with tonal flourish embroidery set against pinstripe patterning throughout.

Another example of elegant advertising, Monarchy has stitched branding above unique pointed pockets, complimented by the brand crest at the back in equally understated black.

Pony Up

Nothing says high society like a set of chic riding boots, and we've found that perfect equestrian set in these leather Canter Boots from G-Star.

No longer limited to practical footwear for jockeys, riding boots have been a huge facet in the fashion world. This fall, they are more on-trend than ever before with countless designers making it their own. Celebrity Sighting: Zac Efron in G-Star

G-Star Raw hosted a release party on the Strip at XIV in West Hollywood for Zac Efron, celebrating the actor's appearance on Nylon Guys Magazine cover. Zac wore a pair of G-Star 3301 Straight Leg Jeans in Raw Denim for the celebration - a prime representation of the down-and-dirty duds the brand has become famous for.

Staff Pick: Striking Gould

It carries that signature military edge that only G-Star can manage and a distinctly vintage vibe. The best part is that all these fun details are what's keeping the frostier bits of winter at bay- the raised collar is belted for a better fit and a set of sigularly angled pockets on the front are large enough to accommodate both weather-worried hands and your myriad daily essentials.

Runway Rockstars

One of our favorite fashion week shows to look forward to this fall was the G-Star New York spring/summer presentation. The edgy netherland-based brand can always be counted on to give it their all in an avant garde display that has included stage elements like conveyor belts and trampolines in the past.

This year was no different with a futuristic spread reminiscent of Star Trek, though the clothes were pretty on par with the times. There were of course the signature G-Star cuts - very military and functional in a way that most runway shows can't manage, but there were also styles present which lent a look that could only be described as retro-futuristic. Looks that would have been at home in the fifties strolled across the runway with a streamlined modern makeover.

G-Star also stepped away from their usually dark palette to pepper in some clean white and inky blue shades. Overall, the change was a welcome one. We love G-Star for the bellicosity of the brand, but this is spring and summer line we're talking about, right?

Staff Pick: G-Star Strikes Gould

G-Star Raw is a brand best known for dancing on the edge with their combat-friendly couture. It features the best of military influences while still maintaining a classic look which commands every eye in the area.

Leather and Lace – Victoriana leads NY Fashion Week

New York’s Fashion Week has approached its mid-cycle, and with more than 20 well-known designers — both established and rising— having sent their fall ‘09 collections down the runway, the trend of the season emerges. The stygian military looks of last winter have returned in full force (with G-Star setting the pace - think military cuts and drop-crotch pants with tough zipper details and faux-rivets), only this time infused with the romance of gaslight Victoriana.

Manifested in lace-heavy looks, velvet, and draped dresses, the trend was most favoured by top designers like Diesel, which featured slightly undone grunge looks heavily based on lingerie and corsets. Max Azria with their nearly all-black collection boasted positively bondage-esque with sheer designs bedecked with opaque ribbons and a truly Victorian edge.

Other steady themes of the week have been metallic fabrics, leathers, and embellishments. Pants have been higher-waisted and trim. There has been an emphasis on the waist - cropped, nipped-in jackets and second-skin dresses with the curious contrast of heavy ruffles and shoulder pads.

Gifting for Your Guy

You just know your sweetie will never leave the house again if you get him that PlayStation for Christmas, so it’s probably time to consider your other options. Too true that he never uses the shaving kit you gave him last year. Monogrammed golf balls are a far from practical, and socks, less than thrilling.

The male gender is generally less vocal about material wants than, say, your closest gal pal, who texts you immediately after her love affair with a pair of stiletto boots she can’t wait to see again. Guesswork is the only gifting information a girl’s got to go by when buying for her guy.
