Trend Alert: Spring Fever

Designers seem to have developed a bit of spring fever, putting out some gorgeous creations that have even us a little lightheaded. Look below for our favorite trends currently rising to the top!


One of the top trends for spring is perfectly transparent, or rather, semi-sheer. Picked out in the ever-popular shades of nude, linen and shell pink, this gauzy goddess look seems to have been combined with last season's 'underwear as outerwear' theme in the form of less-than-substantial bustiers and bralets.

Fringe has a new face for the season. More flapper than last year's tribal, fringe is sporting a more feminine look used more in details than as the main piece. Shoes, bags, headwear, and even trousers have been seen featuring this fun texture.


Harem pants have made a triumphant return and this time they're all grown up. Last season saw some outrageous silhouettes, their billowing bottoms of MC Hammer proportions almost impossible for the everyday woman to wear. Now lines are simple and elegant, and the fabrics breezy enough to infuse every movement with grace.

Fashion Fade

Color-bleed ombre is gearing up to be one of the top trends for spring. A far cry from tie-dye, these graduated hues are chic and slimming and just the right hint of color to wake up neutrals.

We're seeing everything from ombre skirts and tops to ombre shoes, purses, and jeans! Our suggestion is that you only wear one ombre piece at a time and keep the color palette fairly simple since the ombre makes such a big statement on its own.

Spring Forward

With ice still coating the ground here, it seems like a bit of a stretch to be discussing anything spring-related, but we think the latest trends from the spring/summer runways deserve advance accolades. As always, the styles were as diverse as the designers themselves, so we took the liberty of singling out the most prevalent trends of the season.

Abstract Prints

Watercolors were the theme last spring, but this season sees a bolder cousin on the runway. Though some of the new prints are floral-based, most of the shapes were suggestive at best. That certainly won't stop them from making a statement. Picked out in bright cornflower blues, coral pinks, and the ever-popular fuschia, this is a trend made to be noticed.

Working Girl

Characterized by boyfriend blazers and oversized vests paired with minis and strappy sandals, this particular look mixes the best elements of business and pleasure. Jewel tones and unique textures frequenting the trend set it outside conventional professional attire for a look you can take just about anywhere.

Jumpers

Last spring saw the jumper and jumpsuits just starting to pick up popularity as a style meant only for the brave, but this season's jumpers are made for the every-girl and it's so very easy to make it your own. The styles range from very simple to some pretty ornately printed pieces, but the jumper is likely to be the easiest thing to accessorize in fashion history. The singular silhouette encourages chunky vintage or tribal jewelry, but your jumper really will go with just about everything!

Tough Love: Edgy Looks We Adore

We're loving the edgy turn trends have been taking this winter. While the traditional rich, dark shades remain a constant, designers are now adding all sorts of fractious fun to new designs.

Last winter was a bit heavy handed when it came to laying on the couture angst to the point of totalitarian extremes. This season sees a softer side which incorporates lace and luster to complement leather and studs.

The heavy hues and edgy cuts seen in this winter's runway wardrobes appear to have lingered on in the latest spring lines. Tucked in with breezy florals and feminine tints is a trend as refreshing as it is uncharacteristic.

Posh in Plaid

Fashion-conscious music and arts festival Bonnaroo is set under the summer rays of Manchester, Tennessee. Bonnaroo brings together some of the best performers in rock and roll, along with dozens of artists in complementary styles such as jazz, Americana, hip-hop, electronica, and just about any contemporary music you can think of. Rolling Stone magazine named this revolutionary entertainment experience one of the 50 moments that changed the history of rock and roll.

Further colouring this cosmopolitan mix of music are the individuals bringing their personal and often eclectic styles to the table. Though there were just as many neon wellies and trilbies as there were cowboy boots and ten gallon hats, the most prominent trend evidenced at Bonnaroo was plaid.

Some famous faces flaunting the look were Rollum Haas of the indie rock band 'The Features," and Joshua Hedley of the folk band 'Justin Townes Earle,' both displaying the easily-customizable element of the plaid with Rollum in skinny jeans with loafers and Joshua in his slightly more business-like slacks and boots.

Shade of the Season: In the Pink

Now that spring is in full swing, a blush has been seen rising on runways - hot pink, neon pink, baby pink, all shades of pink make the grade this season, and there is a palette to suit all skin tones. You'll be surprised how easily it slips into your wardrobe - the once scary looking florescent pink has been transformed this season and we think you'll agree it is both stylish and very wearable.

Painter's Pride

Any true fashionista will tell you that fashion is an undeniable art, but spring runways are taking the concept a step further with their new palette of watercolor prints.

The most prominent aspect of the trend is found in soft floral prints fit to make Monet proud, yet bold and often abstract pieces have been making their mark too. Never has one theme inspired such a wide and versatile spectrum of styles. Ranging from broad strokes in bright hues, to pale and feathered brushes, this look can be worn by absolutely anyone.

Leather and Lace – Victoriana leads NY Fashion Week

New York’s Fashion Week has approached its mid-cycle, and with more than 20 well-known designers — both established and rising— having sent their fall ‘09 collections down the runway, the trend of the season emerges. The stygian military looks of last winter have returned in full force (with G-Star setting the pace - think military cuts and drop-crotch pants with tough zipper details and faux-rivets), only this time infused with the romance of gaslight Victoriana.

Manifested in lace-heavy looks, velvet, and draped dresses, the trend was most favoured by top designers like Diesel, which featured slightly undone grunge looks heavily based on lingerie and corsets. Max Azria with their nearly all-black collection boasted positively bondage-esque with sheer designs bedecked with opaque ribbons and a truly Victorian edge.

Other steady themes of the week have been metallic fabrics, leathers, and embellishments. Pants have been higher-waisted and trim. There has been an emphasis on the waist - cropped, nipped-in jackets and second-skin dresses with the curious contrast of heavy ruffles and shoulder pads.
