The Bold and the Beautiful

Summer has slipped out of sight, and with it go the warmer cosmetic trends. In their place come rich jewel tones and some pretty outrageous brights.

As shocking as many of the season's new shades look on the runway – and, let's be honest, in their pots, compacts and tubes – the wearability factor is actually quite high.

Many of the boldest shadows, for instance, actually go on quite sheer. And those that aren't can be tamed with judicious application.

Below are a few tips on how to turn this runway trend into your latest look:
  • Instead of covering your entire lid with the brighter shade, do a smokier liner and then add a splash of color in the outer corner of your eye.
  • Start with a sweep of vivid color, then dust it down to a more approachable shade with a shimmery nude shadow. Skip liner and finish with mascara.
  • When it comes to vibrant blush – fuchsia, magenta or tomato red – it can tempered with a more neutral shade. On the cheekbone, where you would typically contour, use a bronzer to create a banana shape. On the apple, use the pop of color. If you exclusively use bold color, it'll turn dated. You have to give it something to melt into.
  • Lip color is the one area where many women are less afraid to be daring. Fall's deep scarlets, wines and lacquer reds strike an ideal balance between retro and modern when skin is flawless and brows are refined. The best way to balance a deep, velvety lip is to have a really clean and groomed eyebrow with a defined arch. For a flawless look, take your time and use a lip brush. Color as bold as you dare to wear it.

Cardis Keep You Covered

Long Cardigans at Lela Rose, Alexander Wang, and Michael Kors.

Cardigans can be the perfect transitional piece in the months to come. In quite a few climes, fall is in full swing and the right cardi can keep you warm and then last well into the warmer days of spring.

Stay on trend for three straight seasons with a long cardigan over your mini dress or a blouse and skirt combo (a la Lela Rose) - skinny belt optional. Or use your cardigan to play with textures, as Alexander Wang does. We wouldn't recommend the strictly runway look of the bottomless Michael Kors cardi, but the long cut can still be flattering with a cute pair of shorties or leggings.

Getting the Boot: A How to Wear Guide

Our favorite part of fall is finally entering the fashion mix - boots! And UrbanMinx has compiled a list to showcase some of our choice styles, accompanied by brief how tos for each boot.

The Glamazon- This Buster Boot from Guess is for the fashionista who loves to face the world head on. The Buster looks best paired with dark wash skinnies and an equally slim top for a streamlined looking silhouette. For a dramatic look, keep your clothing dark and add a splash of colour with a fun statement necklace!

The Wild Child - The whole collection of Nomad boots carries a custom look with a wide array of patterns to appeal to more colourful tastes - certainly not for shrinking violets. Nomad boots look best with solid colours in whatever shade suits you. Because of the wider leg opening, you'll have more liberty with what bottoms you wear. You won't want to pair these pattern-heavy boots with extra textures or prints. Small patterned accents that don't overwhelm are more than welcome, though.

The Westerner- Old Gringo Boots are built for the rugged outdoorswoman, and the neutral shade of this Papaya Boot will allow it to go with just about anything. An earthier look is achieved with an indie plaid button up and a loose-fitting boyfriend jean.

The Starlet - Australia Luxe (originally Love) Collective is prized highly by young Hollywood for its seriously plush comfort and high style elements. This New Nomad Boot practically oozes luxury. To balance out the slight bulk of the boot, you would want to wear something blousy or fully up top. If you don't want wide-looking legs, stick with skinny or straight legged dark jeans.

The Free Spirit - We're talking fringe and fancy free. This Sam Edelman Fringe Boot still carries the sophistacation of the enlightened, but still appeals to your wild side with a bit of tribal-looking fringe. This is your perfect boot for the boho look. Gauzy, draped fabrics and fun-coloured tights are a must.
