New Draft

The military theme has been a perennial runway favorite since the 70s. Anyone would be hard-pressed to imagine that something new might be salvaged from this tired trend, but luckily there are still some in the industry who can boast an imagination.

This season saw more than a few fresh interpretations of this style, displaying a surprising range in the incorporation of anything from feminine florals to an almost medieval-looking gold mesh. The trend turnaround means that military is now accessible to everyone. The feminine fatale might wear lace or pretty florals like pictured above, while the more modern minx might lean toward the leather look on the left.

Mixing and matching is the fun part, but it's always best to start with a good base. Check out these military-inspired items to jumpstart your look!

Fashion Major

The Juicy Couture Band Jacket was featured in Vogue's February issue as the steal of the month! Designer Gela Nash-Taylor referred to the coat as 'classic,' coming from her first love of the original Jimi Hendrix jacket, and sees it worn as pictured above with a slouchy track pant.

One of the Boys

We've already discussed the menswear as womenswear trend of last fall, but now the look has evolved into something much more fun and feminine - while still maintaining a decidedly masculine touch.

This look incorporates a lot more lace, ruffles and general textures than its late predecessor, tucked in amid still-tailored jackets, but more catered to the feminine form than former, blockier styles.

The most noticeable change is the incorporation of colour. Ranging from pale blues to pop pinks, these garments are meant to noticed.

First Lady's Cardinal Rule

Michelle Obama's evolving style has the entire world hooked. So far, her patterns are clear: She has an affinity for sleeveless dresses and pointed flats, and of course, her ever-present cardigans.

The First Lady's flair for cardigans, while far from conservative, keep her ensembles professional in a playful sort of way. From bold leopard prints to feminine silk ruffles, Michelle's tastes are as widely ranged as her politics.

Proof is in the Pattern

In stark and welcome contrast to last winter's washed out whites and edgy, minimalist darks, this coming season's styles are an absolute roar of colour. Reminiscent of whichever eras you might attach the world 'golden,' the runways have turned flashy with a flood of pattern-rich shades.

More noticeable is the shift from the simple classic coat to its bright new cousin - detailed with anything from pretty lemon plaids to modish spots. A personal favorite is the flashback coat, cut in a relaxed vintage fit and printed in posh 60s shades.

If high-saturation hues don't tickle your fancy, the more traditional monochromes remain with a bit of a twist. For an updated look try a fun lined look or some high society houndstooth.
